read it later
over the years i have been using all kinds of read-it-later app or service.
what i found it that it is never later, it is just never.
what ever i kept in the read it later is something i think it is nice to keep.
it is a dumpling ground, like the a consumable gl account.

a plan is just a thought
a plan is - all it could ever possible be -- is a present-moment statement of intent. It's an expression of your current thoughts about how you'd ideally like to deploy your modest influence over the future. The future, of course, is under no obligation to comply.

best say about time
many years ago, i subscribed to the listserve.
this is my favourite, that i always keep in my notes app whatever it is.
Try to imagine a life without timekeeping.
You probably can't. You know the month, the year, the day of the week. There is a clock on your wall or the dashboard of your car. You have a schedule, a calendar, a time for dinner or a movie. Yet all around you, timekeeping is ignored. Birds are not late. A dog does not check its watch. Deer do not fret over passing birthdays.
Man alone measures time. Man alone chimes the hour. And, because of this, man alone suffers the paralysing fear that no other creatures endures. A fear of time running out.

change log
I signed up for Bear Blog at the beginning of the year. I’ve been trying to set this blog up the way I like it—trying things out and then reverting back.
I’m finding that I don’t really know what I want. Should I put these in the top headings? More pages? This theme vs. that; tags vs. no tags.
One thing at a time. It wasn't set out to become anything.

how i ai at work
my workplace uses claude - this is how i use it.
what for
at the end of every workday, i feel the day has been busy enough but at the same time if you ask me tomorrow what i did yesterday - i won't remember.
i have been searching for a way to log my workday.
i tried many things - daily notes, interstitial journaling, way back to the daily log method from 2010.
nothing sticks.
no matter how simple the methods are, they all require some sort of structure or organisation system - tags, conventions, timestamps etc. - i am bad at maintaining them.
all i want is to keep the information and find it again when i need it.
skill
it was inspired by claude's productivity plugin. i tried it then decided to change it to make something similar.
i tell claude what i want, it creates a skill.
what it does
- connects to my emails and calendar and pulls all the information.
- creates a task list for me and updates it as it goes.
- i take notes during the day - either put into an md file or the chat.
- ask claude to consolidate notes in a file by date yyyy-mm-dd.
- claude creates summaries for any projects, profiles of people for me.
- all these notes sit in an obsidian vault.
- do a daily wrap up and a weekly wrap up. claude will summarise what i have done and what the open loops are, what to watch out for. more than once it points out something i haven't considered on a task that i marked done.
how i use it
some examples, i ask claude:
- anything urgent for me today.
- what xxx wants on the monthly report.
- what are the pending actions on the project xyz.
- who is this person?
it is my personal assistant, my crm at work, wikipedia of work-related information.
the beauty is that it get the friction out of my way.

Tinkering
There are 2 types of digital products (devices and apps) - the designer's and engineer's.
Designer's products make you feel good to use them.
They solve your problems quietly, reduce your mental efforts.
The designers have thought about it for you.
It may not do the things you like, but it works and is neat.
“It just works”.
But maybe you like it too much for how it looks and feels.
While the engineering-minded would think designer's products are too hand-holding.
The engineer's products give you freedom, max amount of customisation, dot files, configs, more themes.
Tinkering with the tools becomes a job in itself.
When people like their tool too much, they don't refer to their tool e.g. a hammer as a hammer, they call it by its technical name XYZ-2000-mark2.
You can find them from a simple search on YouTube.
If you start talking about your stuff by its technical name… nothing wrong with it.
It is just a hammer.

why email was fun
why email was fun
anticipation, unlike nows days, I can't check emails anytime on my phone.
I had to go home, dial up my 56k modem, ding ding ding bee...
during the day i thought about i would get any new emails tonight.
I exchanged emails to someone I didn't know, or I exchanged to someone I knew but pretended I didn't know.
Now everything need to fast, need to be now - whatever message apps we using.
Message apps are good for anything need to be sorted out soon. but I not for a chat (for me).
good old days...

I need to stop
I live in my calendar and todo lists.
If it is not in my calendar, I won't remember.
I write down every chores and ambitions in my todo list app.
I am a productivity junkie - I hope the tricks and apps can soothe my pain of getting things done.
I don't care whether human can go to Mars one day, I don't see the point.
I need to stop treating life as a project.
Maybe we all do ?

Complete attention
What do we mean by attention? Is there attention when I am forcing my mind to attend? When I say to myself, I must pay attention, I must control my mind and push aside all other thoughts," would you call that attention? Surely that is not attention. What happens when the mind forces itself to pay attention? It creates a resistance to prevent other thoughts from seeping in; it is concerned with resistance, with pushing away; therefore it is incapable of attention. That is true, is it not?
To understand something totally you must give your complete attention to it. But you will soon find out how extraordinarily difficult that is, because your mind is used to being distracted, so you say, "By Jove, it is good to pay attention, but how am I to do it?" That is, you are back again with the desire to get something, so you will never pay complete attention. ... When you see a tree or a bird, for example, to pay complete attention is not to say, "That is an oak," or, "That is a parrot," and walk by. In giving it a name you have already ceased to pay attention. ...
Whereas, if you are wholly aware, totally attentive when you look at something, then you will find that a complete transformation takes place, and that total attention is the good. There is no other, and you cannot get total attention by practice. With practice you get concentration, that is, you build up walls of resistance, and within those walls of resistance is the concentrator, but that is not attention, it is exclusion.
-- The Book of Life by Krishnamuriti
As I was reading this, I failed to pay my attention. I kept thinking I must copy this into my note book after.
I would not be aware when I am not paying attention, same as when I am.

Being a parent
I am a parent.
Parenting change your life, not everyone could deal with it.
The best comment I heard about being a parent and their young children was “ you love them to death, but at the same time, you want to kill them sometimes”.
It is so true. I could have a much easier life if I am not a parent.
So why?
I don’t know (like many other things in my life), but I don’t regret it.
Sometimes, I fantasise that if I haven’t done this and that what would my life would be now? Knowing what I know now and go back in time the re-live my life in a different way!
But, I think, my KIDS would not be the same.
Until then I know I don't want the alternatives.

Minecraft hardcord mode
I reinstall the Minecraft java edition on my laptop, it is so much better than playing the bedrock edition on iPad with mouse and keyboard - yes i am too old to get used to touch screen to play games.
I start a new single player world in hardcore mode which I haven't done before.
I can't respawn, I can die and the game is over - just like real life.
I am camping, exploring the cave, eating whateven I can catch. I might grow some crops if I am staying a spot long enough.
After a couple of days (in Minecraft days), it hits me that it is just me with all this. The only moving things I can see are the animals and the mods.
I am alone, go solo everywhere, but it is so beautiful and peaceful

plan my day
plan my day is hard.
i have tried many hacks - bullet journals, time box - nothing sticks.
never ask myself why i must do this?
deep down, the real reason is that i don't want to decide what to do next.
i would do nothing, just sit there, do nothing!
i don't plan my day to be a useful person, be more productive, to conquer the shortness of life.
but there are bills to pay, kids to feed and toilets to clean - too many balls that i can't afford to drop.
time makes no sense.

attachment
we should forget, day by day, what we have done - this is true no attachment.
and we should do something new.
to do something new, of course we must know our past, and this is alright.
but we should not holding on anything we have don; we should only reflect on it.
and we must have some idea of what we should do in the future.
but the future is the future, the past is the past;
now we should work on something new.
this is our attitude, and how we should live in this world.

one thing i like about twitter or x is that i don't have to give a title for every single random thought i have.
naming things is hard.
computer work with files, files need names.
i can't remember how many 'untitled' txt files have created over years.
i just don't know how to name them. i could just write one sentence, but i have to give it a title.
i tried OBTF way, too chronicle, I couldn't stick. i am sticky note person in real life. i stick my stickies to my paper notebook.

why i ditched day one app
I keep a journal for many years, literally many.
from paper to digital, my first digital app was day one. i signed up as soon as they implemented the e2e encryption.
i like some of it's features, others i don't need.
i eventually ditched it, because :
- e2e is nice, but it is in their own server for the sake of cross-platform. not a bad thing, i just don't care about the cross platform.
- price increase. i get it, inflations and such. i have been using the app in the same way for many years. i can't justify its price increase for new feature development that i don't care about. i am happy to pay for what i use. unfortunately saas businesses don't pricing like that, they can't manage complex accounting issue.
- after i unsubscribed, i found this update Introducing Daily Chat . wft is this. so we need an ai to write our journals? nothing wrong with ai, i use it everyday. i don't need it for writing my journal. it is private and my own thought. if you are someone need to talk to someone to know what to write in your own journal, maybe you should stop, you don't have to. it is like you need an assistant to talk while you write your private thoughts back in the pen and paper day. it is not a collaboration.
sometime i don't get this mental health trend about journaling. some people say i don't know how to start, i don't what to write , then the mental health guru said you can do this and that.
my advice, if you don't know what to journal, stop. it is not a task to complete, come back when you have something to talk about to yourself. it won't cure you.
if you need to a 'chat' to write your journal, no wonder you have 'problems'.

The screen lights up. The call icon bouncing as if saying pick it, pick it, pick it. And suddenly, you freeze.
Your heart races. Your throat dries. Your breath catches. Anxiety creeps in before you’ve even decided whether to answer.
And your mind begins cooking up every possible scenario: Why are they calling? Did I forget something? Is something wrong? Will I sound unprepared?
For introverts, urgency doesn’t just interrupt the moment. It hijacks the whole nervous system.

brain dump 20260410
i came across this book today. A World Without Email: Reimagining Work in an Age of Communication Overload
i didn't read this book and unlikely i will.
i read 2 of Cal's books but couldn't finish.
his books are not bad but they are one of those books that can-be-a-blog-post kind of book.
he is not a bad writer, but i can't say he is good, i taste too much crafting, not much spark.
what i want to say is i prefer "a world without microsoft teams".
emails are ok, i know where the delete button is.
meanwhile, teams let people have different expectation from me.
manager sends a message on teams: "do you have 5 min to talk?"
i immediately start a one person meeting and sharing my screen.
i like to read about how people work and what tools they use aka productivity porn.
one of the top 3 readers comments always start with: "why not use blah blah blah" or something similar.

kill your apps (updated)
" If your app pushes you to organize, tag, decorate, backlink, or curate, it is working against you."
"The problem isn’t just that there are too many apps. The problem is the identity crisis of modern software. Email clients try to be task managers; chat apps try to be file storage; note-taking apps try to be operating systems.
Apps act like warlords. They fight for your “time in app” and attention, often locking you into their ecosystem by offering a broad suite of [sometimes — mediocre] features, while physically limiting interoperability with other tools.
As a result, your attention is forcefully diverted. Instead of shipping what matters, you spend your cognitive energy inventing workflows that are limited by the app’s or service’s logic. You become a locked-in manager of your tools rather than a creator of your products."

kill my pages
when i signed up bearblog, i had a plan.
i was going to set up the some pages:
- about me (obviously)
- uses
- movies
- books
- ...
i will have these pages like every other blogger on the planet.
a month later, haven't done much.
it wasn't because that i didn't read or watch movie, quite the opposite. i have a long list of them i can copy-&-paste form my notes.txt.
i don't bother, it feels like copying my notes from an old notebook to a new one.
then i wanted to customise the site by adding js, css & html.
so this is what i have done so far:
then i stopped caring about the look of this site. the cosmetic work reminds me too much of my corporate life - wasting hours on the powerpoint slides just because people can't talk about anything without a slide anymore.
if i want to share some text, the text matter. if i want to share some images, the images matter.
i said i use this site as brain dumps, i am taking it to the next level - brain vomit.
foot note: *i appreciate other bloggers writing about what they use, watch and read - i often find something new and interesting that i didn't know about. *this is the best format i like

thoughts on file over app
obsidian's ceo promotes an idea called ‘file over app’. in short it means your data should not be locked in any apps, servers etc.
it is one of the selling points of obsidian - your files are some plain text in markdown format, you have full control and can work with them with or without obsidian.
but is it?
e.g.
i use obsidian to write down some random things i need to do in the daily notes. then i use the task plugin to run a query to keep track of all my open tasks in a single file - ‘tasks.md’.
when i open the same md file with any other text editor, it looks exactly like this
```tasks not done ```
where is my list?
i am sure there are many ways to solve this without obsidian, after all, i can just use grep.
the more i build my workflow around obsidian the more i will rely on it, until the point i can’t do anything anymore without it.
is that file over app?
derek sivers asked us to write plain text files with a similar idea - our files should outlive any big techs and their apps.
i like text files, that’s how i wrote my notes on a computer before there were ecosystems for note-taking apps.
if i use an app built on a database, it appears i am locked in to the app. what if i export / backup the data into some form of plain text daily. i can still access to my data if i am locked out of the app. what will i miss?
is this file over app?
not to mention if it does well, in most case an app with a robust database will outperformance an app on file-based like obsidian.
getting sh*t done faster!
after all, it doesn’t matter:
Use whatever medium and constraint works for you.
Every medium for ideas is corruptible. There’s no magic file format. Most are likely to last long enough for you to convert to something else if need be.
No one is likely to dig through your thoughts in any file format.
reply by emailIt’s important to think of your captured thoughts as fleeting bits of information across all formats and uses. Maybe you’ll get back to them. Maybe you’ll use them. But investing everything in one, stable format doesn’t take away their fleeting nature. Thoughts will exist here and there for a while, then be gone and forgotten. Just like you.
大話西遊
youtube feed里莫名其妙地給我推周星馳的大話西游的解說視頻。
想起來我第一次看這部電影是在小學的暑假,租來的VCR。 據說當年上映後,口碑一邊,但是後來卻成為了經典。 我不記得當時看完後我是不是喜歡,但應該不討厭。
兩部之中,我更喜歡第一步,特別是愛情線。主要我覺的白晶晶比紫霞好。
其次是結局。第一步的結尾預告了第二部預告。 為市場,要預告第二部。就電影本身而言,我覺得不預告第二部更好。
因為有遺憾,有不確定性。 到底最後至尊寶的時空旅行結果是怎樣? 第二部的結束時,已有一個定論。
為娛樂,我喜歡令人釋懷的結構。 就個人感受,我更喜歡留有想象力的結局 - 因為不確定性。
人對不確定性是既害怕有喜歡。
为啥博客
很久以前,我做了半個個人主頁。
當時各大門戶網站除了給免費郵箱,還送免費的主頁空間。 於是裝上了盜版的Dreaweaver邊做邊學,糊弄了半頁的主頁,風格大概就像現在neocities上的個人頁面的基本款。 後來總覺得用Dreamweaver不夠純粹,於是買了html和ASP的書來自學,不過就像背過的單詞書,一直停留在abandon。 主頁也不了了之。
之來,博客興起,註冊了幾個博客的網站,有了個人的頁面。 結果只是轉帖趣聞和碎碎念。
再之後,大家都把內容分享到Facebook之類的社交媒體平台了。 就是所謂的web2.0。
web2.0的好處是,分享的門檻低,有手就行。 隨手分享讀過的書,看過的電影,聽過的音樂,去過的地方,和吃過的一日三餐。 更重要的是互動性。 分享的東西,有回應,有點贊。 反饋機制不但更有趣,還容易上癮。
有時我想是不是人都有的分享欲。
Eward Snowden事件之後,我就把社交媒體上的東西都刪了,只保留了賬號。 一心潛水 ,滿足我的窺探欲。
現在又有人有覺得社交媒體有很多問題,要逃出圍牆花園,鼓勵indieweb之類?
什麼都好,世界變得很快。 現在,我只是想把一些內容放到網絡上。 同時盡可能保留對這些內容的掌控權,所以選擇了blog的形式。
blog是weblog的縮寫,web代表連接。 我的是**brain dumps**,所以是monolog。
